Net-zero

The Western Gateway has all the elements needed to become a world-leading green energy cluster. We have the expertise and resources needed to deliver exciting new types of energy for our area including hydrogen, tidal and fusion.

Working to become the UK’s first Green Energy Super Cluster

The Western Gateway has significant natural assets in solar, tidal, marine, and wind and leading capabilities in hydrogen, nuclear and industrial decarbonisation.

By capitalising on these strengths, we have an opportunity to lead globally on delivering new clean and renewable energy solutions to help decarbonise our economy, opening up new opportunities for local people in the process.

We believe the Western Gateway is poised to be UK’s first green energy super cluster.  Not only do we have the skills and experience to make this a success, but we also have the ambition to use this as a catalyst for growth.

Our projects

The Western Gateway Hydrogen Ecosystem

The Western Gateway is ready to escalate work to develop the application of hydrogen across the many potential uses. Our map and vision demonstrates the breadth of the area’s growing and integrated Hydrogen Ecosystem.  We are poised to become a nationally significant area contributing the UK’s Government’s commitment to reach Net Zero.

Severn Edge

Representing the twin decommissioned nuclear plants of Oldbury and Berkeley, Severn Edge brings together communities, expertise and leaders to drive the development of a Net Zero future.

Sitting at the centre of the Western Gateway, Severn Edge aims to bring together the potential of our areas' Green Energy Super Cluster to provide low carbon energy which can provide jobs and new opportunities across South Wales and Western England.

Independent commission to explore sustainable energy in the Severn

With the third highest tidal range in the world, the Severn Estuary has the potential to contribute up to 7 per cent of the UK’s energy need. In Cardiff and the Blue Eden development in Swansea, work is planned to develop tidal lagoons that will generate renewable energy for nearby communities. Our powerhouse partnership will look at what else might be done to tap into the Estuary’s potential.
